If you’ve been on the Internet or you’re into web developing or even if you own your own website, then you’ve probably heard the word – BACKLINKS. This is to do with Search Engine Optimization or SEO), which is how you get your website noticed and ranked high on the search engines. First of all, let's be clear what they are… A backlink is an external link on another website, which leads back to your site. This can be done in a variety of ways and is essential in helping you to receive more traffic. If you want to master SEO, then backlinks should definitely be included in your arsenal. Nowadays, search engines not only rank your website based on on-site factors, such as keywords, metatags and so on, but they also rate your website based on popularity, credibility and relevance. In fact, the search engines LOVE it when your site is linked to from another site. The reason why backlinks are so loved by the search engines is due to the fact that it’s only quantifiable and assessable by algorithms and can’t be manipulated by users, compared to other methods, such as on-site SEO that isn’t as effective anymore. Another reason why backlinks are essential for traffic is they create lasting traffic to your website. Once your link is there, it’s there forever or until the particular site where your link’s posted is taken down. With paid traffic (Google Ads etc), the traffic only comes during the duration of the ad and will stop as soon as payment stops. Therefore, backlinks are a “must have” in your search engine optimization armory. You can implement this strategy by doing your own backlinking or you could pay a service company to do it for you, depending on your budget. All said, the sooner you start getting backlinks the better.
