The Basics of Web Hosting

Many people have the desire to create their own website, but they’re either afraid of technology or just don’t know where to start. Even after you’ve designed your website, what should you do next? The next step should be to obtain a web hosting plan. What does web hosting do? Theoretically, web hosting is a “home” for your website on the World Wide Web (the Internet). Just like your computer and its hard disk space, you can’t save files or have files on your computer without having a hard disk to host those files. It’s the same with web hosting. The website you design is a file too. Hence, your web host works as the “hard disk” to house your website on the Internet, so it can be viewed by the world and his next door neighbour’s cat. There are two popular kinds of web hosting and they’re the free and paid dedicated ones. 1. Free web hosting usually provides limited hosting space and limited bandwidth. Usually, it includes the name of the hosting company in your domain name URL. This is extremely popular amongst blog websites and such. 2. For paid, dedicated web hosting you should be able to choose your own plan, where you can choose your features, hosting space, bandwidth and so much more. However, you need to register your domain name first in order for you to host your website on a web hosting service. Once you register a domain name, all you need to do is upload your website to your server and your website is ready to be viewed on the Internet. 3. Other types of web hosting include ~ shared hosting, co-location hosting and reseller hosting. When all’s said and done, it’s important to have your own web hosting plan, since it’s the bread and butter of owning your own website. One point to note is to be wise in choosing the features based on your needs. For example: don’t purchase mega bandwidth space if you only intend to create one website.
